Enjoy it while it lasts

I think every fan has a list of favorites who we never want to see leave our team. In reality, in Baseball today, that is not gonna happen. Kris Bryant is one player I love to death and my heart says "Pay him anything", just keep him a Cub, but my mind says differently.

Kris Bryant and most premier talent players really don't care who they play with. For them, it is all about making obscene money. The excuse we hear is that they want to drive up the pay in baseball for the lesser known players. We received our first dose of the new reality when KB turned down a $200,000,000 multi year deal from his team. https://www.mlb.com/news/kris-bryant-turned-down-200m-deal-from-cubs/c-297575416 . That is one helluva deal for a guy with so little under his belt! He's willing to risk the next 3 years to injury or less than stellar performance to get an even bigger deal from someone else. He will remain a Cub only if they are the highest bidder.

Bryce Harper is another example. Harper didn't even have a good year in 2018, yet he is considering offers of 10 yr/ $300,000,000 +. It is ridiculous to pay this much for this long for any player. The risk is too great. Furthermore, I would argue, these huge FA Contracts do nothing but keep lessor known player salaries down.

Will the Cubs pay too much for players down the line? Yes, but they will pay too much for pitchers as that is the one area the Farm System has yet to develop, not for position players for some time.

I really enjoy KB as a Cub, but I know it will end in 3 years. Our best bet is to fall in love with someone else like David Bote or the next young player that comes around.
